Sporting Kansas City acquired him in August 2026 after nearly five years of professional development with Austin. The move followed a campaign in which he led his former club in goal contributions and received recognition among Major League Soccer’s leading young players.

Austin FC Made Wolff Its First Homegrown Signing
Wolff spent part of his youth in Kansas City, where Sporting Blue Valley was his first youth club. He later developed within the Columbus Crew and Atlanta United academy systems before joining Austin.
On September 9, 2021, Austin FC signed the 16-year-old as its first Homegrown Player. He was also the youngest player the club had signed at that point.
He made his professional debut on November 3, 2021, when he entered as a late substitute in Austin’s 3–1 victory over Sporting Kansas City. He earned his first senior start against Los Angeles FC on May 18, 2022, and recorded his first professional assist 11 days later against LA Galaxy.
Wolff reached another milestone on March 11, 2023. He assisted Austin’s opening goal and then scored the winner in a 2–1 victory away to Real Salt Lake. It was his first goal at the senior level.
His role expanded across his early seasons. As a teenager, he gained experience in the MLS regular season and playoffs as well as other domestic and continental competitions. He then appeared in 36 of Austin’s 37 matches across all competitions in 2024, contributing one goal and five assists.
The U-20 World Cup Added International Experience
Wolff represented the United States at both U-19 and U-20 levels. U.S. Soccer selected him for its 21-player squad at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.
He started all five U.S. matches during the tournament. In the opening group match against Ecuador, he supplied the pass for Jonathan Gómez’s stoppage-time winner.
His most prominent contribution came against New Zealand in the Round of 16. Wolff opened the scoring in the 15th minute as the United States earned a 4–0 victory and advanced to the quarterfinals.
He completed the tournament with one goal and two assists. Those were youth international appearances, not senior United States caps.
In a statement before the tournament, Wolff described representing the country at that level as an honor. He also said his experience with Austin had prepared him for the opportunity.
Positional Versatility Supported His Development
Although Wolff has been used in several areas of the field, he told KUT & KUTX Studios in September 2025 that he felt most comfortable in midfield. He viewed his experience in different positions as a useful part of his education because it allowed him to see matches from different perspectives.
That versatility included attacking, central and deeper midfield assignments, along with occasional use in wider or defensive roles. Wolff said learning those positions helped him encounter different situations and make decisions under match pressure.
He also described balancing freedom and structure as an important part of his development. Some phases of a match allowed him to take risks, while others required him to maintain the team’s tactical shape. By 2025, he believed he had improved at recognizing which approach a particular moment required.
Football was a consistent part of his upbringing. His father, Josh Wolff, played for the United States and represented the Kansas City Wizards before later becoming Austin FC’s head coach. Owen credited his father’s understanding of the game with influencing how he reads situations on the field.
He also credited coach Nico Estévez with establishing a clear role for him at Austin. Their discussions helped him understand what the team expected and where he could contribute most effectively.
The family moved between several places because of Josh’s playing and coaching career. Owen said experiencing different cities and cultures helped him learn to adapt to new environments. He spent part of his early childhood in Germany but acknowledged that he remembers little about that period because of his age.
His 2025 Season Established a New Level at Austin
Wolff’s most productive Austin campaign arrived in 2025. He registered seven goals and 12 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions, giving him a team-leading 19 goal contributions.
The competition scope is important when reading those figures. His MLS regular-season total was seven goals and eight assists, while the larger assist count includes Austin’s matches in other competitions.
All seven of his goals came during the second half of the season. Between July 16 and October 18, he produced seven goals and four assists across 13 regular-season matches. His contributions helped Austin finish sixth in the Western Conference, return to the MLS Cup Playoffs and reach the U.S. Open Cup Final.
Austin named him its 2025 Offensive Player of the Year. He also finished fourth in the league’s 22 Under 22 ranking, determined by a panel that included MLS coaches, executives, and selected media representatives.
It was his third consecutive appearance on that list. He had placed 18th in 2023 and 17th in 2024 before rising to fourth following his breakthrough season.
Wolff attributed part of his improvement to having a clearly defined role. He also said opportunities in Austin had helped build his confidence and comfort within the professional environment.
A New Austin Contract Preceded His Sporting KC Transfer
Austin rewarded Wolff’s 2025 performances with a new U22 Initiative contract on January 5, 2026. The agreement was guaranteed through June 2030 and placed him in a roster category designed to help MLS clubs retain leading young players.
At the time, Wolff said he had developed in Austin as both a player and a person. He expressed confidence about what the club could accomplish after committing to the long-term agreement.
His preparations for the new season were interrupted later that month. Austin announced that he underwent an operation on January 13 to address a sports hernia. The club expected him to make a full recovery by mid-to-late February.
Despite the recent contract extension, Wolff’s Austin career ended in August. Interim head coach Davy Arnaud said the club had held discussions since December 2025 and was prepared to grant the player’s wish to pursue an opportunity elsewhere if it received an acceptable offer. Wolff did not publicly provide a detailed reason for requesting the move.
On August 26, 2026, Sporting Kansas City acquired him for a guaranteed $4.5 million. The agreement included up to $3.1 million in additional performance-related payments, potentially taking the deal’s value to $7.6 million. Austin also retained a percentage of any future transfer.
The additional amount is conditional, not guaranteed, and the specific performance requirements were not disclosed.
Wolff joined Sporting as a U22 Initiative player with a contract running through June 2031. His final Austin record stood at 10 goals and 23 assists in 147 appearances across all competitions.
The transfer also brought him back to a city tied to his early development and family history. His father played for the Kansas City Wizards during two spells, while Owen had previously played for Sporting Blue Valley.
In his farewell statement, Wolff described Austin as a special place where he began his career and shared important experiences with teammates, coaches and supporters. He thanked those who contributed to his development during his time with the club.
Owen Wolff’s Career Has Entered a New MLS Phase
Wolff left Austin with a record extending well beyond his connection to a prominent football family. He became the club’s first Homegrown signing, gained U-20 World Cup experience, developed across several midfield roles, and delivered a career-best season in 2025.
His transfer to Sporting Kansas City opened the next stage of that progression. He joined Sporting as a U22 Initiative player under contract through June 2031, beginning the next phase of his professional career.
