Kenan Thompson and the Longevity Behind His Television Career

Kenan Thompson

Kenan Thompson has built an unusually long television career around continuity rather than constant reinvention. He joined Saturday Night Live in 2003 and, by 2026, had completed 23 seasons and begun a 24th, extending his record as the longest-serving cast member in the program’s history.

That longevity was not automatic. Thompson has spoken about an unsuccessful initial audition, the difficulty of adjusting to sketch writing, and why he later chose stability instead of leaving, since long-serving cast members are often expected to move on. At the same time, his professional responsibilities expanded into producing, business development, and major hosting assignments.

How His Long Television Run Took Shape

Thompson joined Saturday Night Live in 2003, but his route onto the program was not immediate. He has said that an earlier audition was unsuccessful, making his eventual arrival the result of more than a straightforward first attempt.

Joining the cast also required him to adapt to an unfamiliar creative process. In a 2023 interview with the Television Academy, Thompson recalled that he initially had to learn sketch writing. His previous professional experience had not prepared him for every part of the program’s writing system.

Thompson has identified early collaboration with Maya Rudolph as an important breakthrough in his adjustment to the show.

What followed was a tenure that eventually surpassed every previous cast run in the program’s history. By the end of Season 51, Thompson had completed 23 seasons and held the record as the longest-running cast member in the program’s history.

Thompson’s long SNL tenure also overlaps with the period when Andy Samberg joined the program’s digital-comedy era.

Why He Chose Stability Instead of Moving On

Thompson has directly addressed why he stayed when many colleagues eventually pursued different paths. In his Television Academy interview, he described stability as an important factor in his decision.

He also explained that Saturday Night Live was not his first experience of professional success. Because he already understood what opportunities outside the program could look like, he didn’t feel compelled to leave to prove another career path was possible.

That position remained largely unchanged in 2026. During a September appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang, Thompson spoke about the people connected with the show as a professional “family.” He said he would rather remain close to that environment than leave merely because others might assume someone with such a long tenure should eventually move on.

His comments make an important distinction between staying by default and choosing continuity. In that interview, he still preferred to remain with the program, describing it as a choice rather than an obligation.

How His Professional Role Expanded Beyond Performing

Remaining with one long-running program did not mean Thompson kept the same professional role throughout his career. He has said that he became increasingly interested in the business side of his work, including producing, deal-making, and greater participation in professional decisions.

In 2021, he co-founded Artists For Artists with John Ryan Jr. The Television Academy later discussed the venture as it described Thompson’s growing involvement in producing and business development.

He has also taken on executive-producing responsibilities. These responsibilities expanded his work beyond his established on-camera role while he continued his long-running television position.

That combination is central to understanding his longevity. Rather than treating departure as the only route to professional growth, Thompson expanded the responsibilities he handled while continuing his established television role.

How Industry Recognition Reflected His Career Growth

Thompson’s long tenure has been accompanied by formal industry recognition. The Television Academy’s current awards database records six Primetime Emmy nominations and one win.

His Emmy victory came in 2018. The Academy’s record also includes recognition connected with his long-running television work and a 2021 lead-performer nomination for Kenan.

Another major responsibility followed in 2022, when NBC and the Television Academy selected him to host the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. The event took place on September 12, 2022.

That same year, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Thompson with the 2,728th Hollywood Walk of Fame star in the Television category. The ceremony was held on August 11, 2022.

These milestones came after nearly two decades of his SNL tenure, placing his recognition within a longer professional timeline rather than focusing only on his early years.

What His 2026 Return Says About His Career Longevity

NBCUniversal confirmed on September 16, 2026, that Thompson would return for Season 52. The season began on September 26.

The distinction between completed and current seasons is important: he had finished 23 seasons through Season 51, while Season 52 became his 24th season. It should therefore be described as his 24th season, not his 24th completed season.

His return extended a record that was already unmatched within the cast. More significantly, it came only weeks after Thompson had publicly explained that he still valued the stability and professional relationships surrounding the program.

Kenan Thompson’s television longevity is therefore more than a count of seasons. His own interviews describe a career shaped by adaptation, stability and an active decision to remain, while his work gradually expanded into producing, business development and major industry responsibilities. His 2026 return places that record in the present rather than leaving it as a milestone from an earlier stage of his career.
