Jensen Ackles Expands His Career Through Producing and Business

Jensen Ackles

Jensen Ackles spent 15 seasons in a central television role, but his professional life after 2020 has developed in several different directions. Producing through Chaos Machine Productions, working under a first-look relationship with Amazon, and maintaining a separate business interest through Family Business Beer Company have become important parts of that broader career.

His recent interviews also provide useful context for those choices. Ackles has discussed how family responsibilities shape his decisions, why certain projects appeal to him, and how he manages a career that still involves regular travel.

How His Long-Running Television Career Created a Foundation for Change

Ackles spent 15 seasons playing Dean Winchester on Supernatural, beginning in 2005 and continuing until the series concluded in 2020. The CW’s official records identify him as a central member of the cast throughout that long run.

Ackles’ long Supernatural run also connected him professionally with Misha Collins, whose later public work expanded into humanitarian and community projects.

That period established the professional identity he remains most closely associated with, but the years around the series’ end also marked a shift in the structure of his work.

Rather than limiting his post-2020 career to individual screen roles, Ackles began taking on production responsibilities and developing projects through a company created with Danneel Ackles. His later work with Amazon extended that shift further by connecting producing and performing under the same professional relationship.

How Chaos Machine Productions Expanded His Professional Role

Jensen and Danneel Ackles formed Chaos Machine Productions in 2020. When the company launched, it secured a multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.

The company gave the couple a formal structure to develop and produce projects. One early example was The Winchesters. Official CW production credits list both Jensen and Danneel as executive producers through Chaos Machine Productions.

Their company changed studio relationships in April 2023, when Chaos Machine moved to a first-look television agreement with Amazon. Variety reported that the arrangement covered both producing and performing, while Amazon television chief Vernon Sanders also publicly confirmed the relationship.

That agreement placed Ackles in a broader professional position than the one that defined much of his earlier career. He could continue appearing in projects while also working through a company involved in development and executive production.

How Recent Projects Reflect His Changing Career Choices

Ackles’ 2025 work on Countdown clearly illustrates how he has described choosing newer projects.

He told TheWrap the series appealed to him partly because its conflicts carried real-world consequences rather than relying on supernatural or superhero solutions. In a separate Men’s Health interview, he said his connection with creator Derek Haas also influenced his decision. The two found common ground in their interest in older action storytelling.

Prime Video released Countdown on June 25, 2025, with Ackles playing LAPD detective Mark Meachum. The platform lists 13 episodes.

The series did not continue beyond that first season. Prime Video declined to renew it in October 2025, and Ackles later acknowledged the decision publicly. He expressed disappointment while also thanking the cast, crew, and the opportunity to make the series.

His relationship with Amazon nevertheless continued. In June 2026, Amazon officially confirmed that Ackles and Aya Cash would lead Vought Rising, with the project scheduled for 2027.

The Amazon relationship extends beyond a single project because Chaos Machine also has a first-look television agreement with the company.

How Family Business Beer Company Added a Separate Business Role

Ackles also has a documented business role outside television production.

Family Business Beer Company‘s official website identifies Jensen and Danneel Ackles as owners. The company grew out of home-brewing experiments by Ackles and his brother-in-law, Gino Graul.

In a 2018 Forbes interview, Ackles explained that the idea grew gradually after the two experimented with brewing on a small system while living in California. The project later became a Texas-based business.

The brewery’s operation has since changed. Its public Dripping Springs location closed in May 2024, and the company says it shifted its focus toward distributing its products in Texas.

That distinction is important because older coverage still describes the business primarily as a public destination brewery. By 2026, the company still identified Jensen and Danneel as owners, but its model no longer centered on the former Dripping Springs visitor location.

How Family Responsibilities Influenced Work and Location Decisions

Ackles has directly linked major life decisions to family responsibilities.

Speaking to Forbes in 2018, he explained that becoming a parent changed how he and Danneel thought about where they wanted to live. Because his work didn’t require the family to stay in California permanently, they moved to Austin, where they could be closer to relatives.

That Texas chapter later changed, too. PEOPLE reported in 2025 that the family had moved to Connecticut in 2023, with the location proving more practical for work connected with Toronto.

The newer reporting updates older profiles that continue to associate Ackles primarily with Austin. Texas remains important to his business history, but Connecticut is the family’s more recent verified location.

Ackles has also spoken directly about the place his wife and children hold in his life. In the 2025 PEOPLE interview, he described his family as the stable center of a professional routine that often requires him to travel.

What His Recent Interviews Reveal About His Working Style

Recent interviews offer several specific details about how Ackles approaches work without requiring broader assumptions about his personality.

In a 2025 GQ interview, he said he keeps scripts digitally available but also likes printed copies that he can mark up. Annotating scripts remains part of his regular working routine.

He also described trying not to stay constantly attached to his phone, saying he mainly relies on a smaller device for basic calling and texting. During the same interview, he showed notes and drawings from his children that he carries when traveling, describing them as a connection to home.

His long professional relationship with Jared Padalecki has also continued beyond their years working together. Ackles told Men’s Health that they remain in regular contact and described Padalecki as someone he would call if he needed help.

The same interview addressed recurring interest in whether Ackles might return to the franchise that defined much of his earlier career. He said he remained open to revisiting it under the right circumstances, particularly with people who understand its history and established world. His comments were conditional, not an announcement of a new production.

His recent work now combines production responsibilities, business ownership, and selective project choices alongside the professional commitments he has discussed in interviews.
